MORE than one-fifth of an ambitious 1400-kilometre cycleway on the NSW coast from the Queensland to Victorian borders is now operational or funded. This includes grants totalling $1.34 million to nine councils in the state budget to construct another 7.4km and line-mark 13km. Based on a concept by the urban planner Elias Duek-Cohen, the Coastline Cycleway was defined by Bicycle NSW and largely funded by the Roads and Traffic Authority and aims to link communities along the coast.Since it began in March 2003 the cycleway program has provided $7 million for 78 projects resulting in the construction of more than 86km of pathways.More than 320km of the route is now either in place or funded in the form of shared pedestrian/cycle paths or on-road cycle lanes.Ballina, Eurobodalla, Gosford, Great Lakes, Nambucca, Newcastle, Port Stephens, Richmond Valley and Shellharbour councils will each build up to 1.5km of cycleway this year.
