JAKE Sylvester is off to the Australian school surfing titles after becoming the NSW under-16 boys champion at the NSW titles held at Ballina last Thursday.

The Bar Beach 13-year-old made the NSW under-16 All Star team by emerging victorious from a tough field last week.

It was the first time the youngster had competed at the NSW schools titles he qualified last year but did not compete. He will represent his state for the first time on the national stage in South Australia in November and December.

? Lake Macquarie BMX Club competitors Graeme Mudd and Adam Sanderson exploited a home-ground advantage to lead Australia to victory over New Zealand in the first leg of a home-and-away trans-Tasman junior series at Argenton on Sunday.

Mudd and Sanderson competed in the 14/15-years boys Trans-Tasman Challenge, comprising five races, and showed why they will both represent Australia at the world BMX titles in Canada next month with respective victories.

They are both likely to compete for Australia in the return leg of the series in New Zealand in October.

The team will be picked from qualification races in Tamworth in August.

Fellow local Rachel Jones, who is the Australian 12-years girls champion, competed in the Mighty 11s Trans-Tasman Challenge, winning two of the five races she contested.
