GERROA surfing sensation Sally Fitzgibbons lived up to expectations by winning the under 18 girls' division of the Australian Grommet Titles at Sharpes Beach near Ballina yesterday.

Fitzgibbons was the only surfer to win back-to-back individual Australian junior titles this year.

The 2005 under 16 national champ was never in doubt, blasting out of the blocks with two high-scoring rides which would ultimately prove enough to hold off Cabarita's Ashleigh Smith.

Fitzgibbons complied a heat score of 13.83 to defeat Smith on 12.10, Amy Hart (Currumbin, Qld) and Tiana McNeven (Tugun, Qld).

"I was happy to get those two quick waves under my belt and then sit on the other girls and make sure they didn't get ahead of me," Fitzgibbons said.

"It definitely wasn't easy. I was a little bit nervous. I go into every competition like it's my first."

Fitzgibbons' win secured her a berth into the 2007 junior world championships in Portugal next May.

"Going to Portugal will be awesome, hopefully Team Australia will do us proud," she said.

Fitzgibbons and girls' under 16 winner, Narrabeen's Laura Enever, dominated Queenslanders Dimity Stoyle (Maroochydore) and Naomi Stevic (Sunrise Beach) to win the under 19 girls' All-Stars national title.

The only surfer to post a perfect 10-point ride in the week-long tournament, Fitzgibbons was honoured with the prestigious Ma Bendall/Isabell Letham Award.

Culburra's Tyler Wright was an under 16 girls' finalist, finishing third behind Enever.

The under 18 boys' national title went to Teale Vanner (Kangaroo Island, SA), Todd Rosewall (Jan Juc, Vic) won the boys' under 16s, while in teams finals, the under 19 boys' title went to NSW and the under 16 boys to Queensland. The Mark Richards Shield schools titles winners were: U19 boys Palm Beach Currumbin High, Qld; U19 girls St Marks College, WA; under 16 boys Margaret River Senior High, WA.
