Ballina Grommet Titles Attract Region's Best Talent

SOME of the Illawarra, South Coast and Shoalhaven's best young surfers will be among those competing in the Quiksilver Australian grommet titles at Ballina, starting this weekend.

Among those talented teenagers taking part will be Sally Fitzgibbons and Dean Bowen (Gerroa), Owen Wright (Culburra) and Jesse Allen (Scarborough).

Fitzgibbons and Wright are reigning under 16 Quiksilver Australian grommet champs, while Bowen won the King of the Groms in France in August.

Ten Australian junior surfing titles - the under 18 and 16 boys' and girls' championships, along with six national school titles, will be decided from a qualifying round representing all states.

Adding to the already high stakes is the automatic inclusion of the victorious surfers in the under 18 and 16 boys and girls into the 2007 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships in Portugal next May.
